Azerbaijan lies at the intersection of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, marked by diverse landscapes from the Greater Caucasus mountains in the north to subtropical lowlands in the southeast. The capital city Baku sits on the Caspian Sea and is known for surrounding mud volcanoes near Gobustan. Visitors often prefer May to October for warm weather, though mountain passes can be snowbound in winter.
